Question

Determine the density of caesium chloride which crystallises in a bcc type structure with the edge length 412.1 pm. The atomic masses of Cs and Cl are 133 and 35.5 respectively. (4.0 g cm3)

Open in App
Solution

The molecular weight of CsCl,

M=133+35.5=168.5 g/mol.

A bcc unit cell has 2 atoms per unit cell( Z=2)

Avogadro's number N0=6.023×1023 molecules/mol

The edge length a=412.1 pm=412.1×1010 cm

The density

ρ=Z×MN0×a3

ρ=2×168.5 g/mol6.023×1023 molecules/mol×(412.1×1010 cm3)3

ρ=8.0 g/cm3
