Question

Determine the equivalent weight of sodium chloride (NaCl).

Open in App
Solution

Equivalent weight: An equivalent weight of a solution is defined as the molecular weight of the solute divided by the valence of the solute.
Equivalent weight = molecular weight / x (Where, x represents the valency factor)

Part -1: To calculate the molecular weight :

The molecular weight of sodium chloride (NaCl) is

Na = 1x23=23g

Cl =1x35.5 g = 35.5 g

The molecular mass of NaCl= mass of Na + mass of Cl

NaCl= 23+35.5 = 58.5 g/mol

The valence of NaCl is 1.

Part -2: To calculate the equivalent weight:

According to the formula,

Equivalent Weight = Molecular weight/ Valency

= 58.5÷1= 58.5 g/mol

Therefore, the equivalent weight of sodium chloride (NaCl) is 58.5 g/mol.
