Solution

The correct option is D

0.5 m/s

Okay

Let's take ceiling as reference point

Marking position of pulley C, D and A

Assuming direction of velocity of C and E

There are two strings

Lets find their length

(xAxC) + (xExC) + xE = l1

xA + 2xE 2xC = l1

Differentiating with t we get

vA 2vE 2vC = 0

as string length is decreasing according to our assumed direction of velocity.

vA = 2vE + 2vC ....(1)

Now for the second string

xC + xE = l2

differentiating

vC vE = 0

as xE is decreasing by our assumed direction of velocity

vC = vE ....(ii)

substituting this in eg (i) we get

vA = 4vE

The velocity of block and pulley are same

vA = 4vB

vA = 2 m/s

vB = 0.5 m/s in the upward direction.
