We know that the roots of a quadratic equation ax2+bx+c=0 are equal when D = 0.
i.e., b24ac=0

For equation x2 − kx + 36 = 0,
a = 1, b = -k and c = 36

(k)2(4×1×36)=0

k=12 or 12
