Question

Determine whether the following reaction will be spontaneous or nonspontaneous under standard conditions.
Zn(s)+Cu2+(aq)Zn2+(aq)+Cu(s), ΔH0=219kJ, ΔS0=21JK1.

Solution

G= H - T S
Where G is change in Gibbs free energy
H is change in enthalpy
S is entropy change .
Any reaction is spontaneous if G is negative for that reaction.
T is 273K (standard conditions)

G = -219000 - 273 ×(- 21)
G = -213267 J
Since G is negative hence reaction is spontaneous .
