Question

Determine which of the following polynomials has (x+1) a factor :

x3+x2+x+1

Open in App
Solution

STEP 1 : Determining whether polynomial has (x+1) a factor or not

Let p(x)=x3+x2+x+1 be the polynomial

By factor theorem

If p(x) is a polynomial of degree n>1 and a is any real number, then x–a is a factor of p(x), if p(a)=0,

Therefore, (x+1) is a factor of p(x), if p(-1)=0

p(x)=x3+x2+x+1

p(-1)=-13+-12+-1+1

p(-1)=-1+1-1+1

p(-1)=-2+2=0

Since, p(-1)=0

Hence, (x+1) is a factor of polynomial x3+x2+x+1.
