Solution
Aim: To show the effect of flowing water on top soil.
Requirements: Soil, seeds, water and two identical trays. You can take paddy seeds/mustard seeds/green gram.
Procedure:
Fill the trays with soil and plant the seeds in one tray. Keep watering the trays for few days until the seeds germinate into the plantlets in one tray.
Fix both the trays in tilted position making sure that both trays are at same angle.
Start poring water slowly in both trays until the water stars flowing out of the trays.
Now observe the amount of soil carried out from each tray.
Now increase the amount of water being poured in the trays (around 3-4 times).
Again study the amount of soil that has been carried out from each tray.
Observations: The soil from the tray in which there were plants would flow lesser than the tray in which there were no plants. This is because of the roots of the plants that hold the top soil; thereby, preventing soil erosion.
