Difference between temporary and permanent hardness are :
Temporary hardness :
  • It is due to the presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium.
  • It can be removed by boiling.
  • Hardness removal is cheap.

Permanent hardness:
  • It is due to the presence of chlorides or sulphates of calcium and magnesium.
  • It cannot be removed by boiling.
  • Removal of this hardness is expensive.
