Compare between living and non-living.
Living beings
The things or organisms which show the life processes like nutrition, respiration, metabolism, reproduction, response to stimuli, etc are called living organisms.
Non-living beings
The things that do not show such life processes are called non-livings.
Points of comparison | Living beings | Non-living beings |
Nutrition | Living beings require energy, which they get from the food they eat or intake. | Non-living things do not take food and do not show nutrition. |
Respiration | Living beings need oxygen for living, and they need to burn food with the help of oxygen to get energy. Therefore, all living beings respire. | Non-living things do not require oxygen and hence,, do not respire. |
Movement | The living beings except plants and few sessile animal show movement. They move from one place to another in search of food, water and shelter. | Non-living things do not show voluntary movement like living beings. |
Growth | The living things show growth in height, girth and weight. | Non-living things remain same. They do not show growth. |
Metabolism | Metabolism is the process of formation and breaking of the biological molecules. In living beings protein, starch, glycogen, etc, like molecules are always formed. Also, during the process of digestion, these molecules are broken down into absorbable small molecules like glucose, amino acids, etc. Hence, living beings show metabolism. | No new substance is formed or broken down in non-living things. Therefore, they do not show metabolism. |
Respond to stimuli | The living beings respond to external stimuli like cold, heat, etc. | Non-living things are not affected by external stimuli. |
Reproduction | Living beings reproduce and give birth to young ones of their own kind. | Non-living things do not divide and give birth to new things. |
