Difference between monovalent atom and divalentv atoms

Monovalent atoms are those atoms which show a valency of 1, while divalent atoms are those which show a valency of 2. For example, sodium (Na), chlorine, potassium etc are monovalent while magnesium, oxygen, calcium are divalent.
