Question

Difference between parthenocarpy and apomixis? Give 10 points of difference between both?

Open in App
Solution

Well, there are no ten point difference between parthenocarpy and apomixis.

Apomixis is defined as the asexual formation of a seed from the ovule leading to embryo development. The formation is from the maternal tissues of the ovule, thus it avoids the processes of meiosis and fertilization.

Parthenocarpy is the natural or artificially induced production of fruit which occurs without fertilization of ovules. The fruit is therefore seedless.
They both are completely different as apomixis is formation of seed while parthenocarpy is production of fruit.

The main differences are:

1)Apomixis creates seeds, parthenocarpy doesn't produce seeds.

2) Parthenocarpy produces fruits only, without seeds, apomixis doesn't produce any fruit.

3) Apomixis is a mode of reproduction, parthenocarpy is not a mode of reproduction.

4) In apomixis, ovules develop(to seeds) while in parthenocarpy, the ovary develops.

The difference between both are limited to these points. I am afraid there are no more points to fit in as relevant differences between both.
