Aerobic respiration-
  • Breakdown of glucose in presence of oxygen.
  • The complete breakdown of glucose to carbon dioxide and water
  • Release a high amount of energy.
Anaerobic respiration-
  • Takes place in absence of oxygen
  • Partial breakdown of glucose into ethanol or lactic acid depending on the pathway.
  • Releases a lower amount of energy.

The common pathway in both of these is the glycolysis that takes place in the cytoplasm.
