Open in App
Solution

  • Major difference between sea and bay:
  • Sea- the exapnse of salt water that covers most of the earth's surface and surrouns it's landamass.
  • Bay- a broad inlet of sea where the land curves inwards.
  • Now the major difference between nature of Arabian Sea and bay of Bengal is the directions in which the water currents flow plus the temperature of water and the obviously the expanse of water.
  • These are also the main reasons why our Eastern coastal line is more suspectible for disasters than Western.
  • In both Arabian Sea and bay of Bengal currents in water movie from East to West. But in case of bay of Bengal they bring the cyclones , tsunamis generated in the water towards coast.
  • Also the about the temperature of both water bodies, bay of Bengal being comparatively small water body plus surrounded by land on three sides approximately gives it enough to have high temperature than Arabian Sea. And as the temperature of water rises, it is all together more conducive for forming tropical cyclones which occasionally hits Eastern coastal line.
  • Also , there is difference in both water bodies by the role played by each in monsoon of India.
  • Arabian Sea has major role in onset of monsoon ( forming cell with Mascarene's high in Indian ocean ) and thus this main Arabian Sea branch of S-w monsoon breaks into two branches as Arabian Sea branch and bay of Bengal branch near southern tip of Indian subcontinent.
  • While bay of Bengal plays a major role in retreating monsoon , that is the reason why Tamil Nadu coast receives maximum rainfall during retreating monsoon.
