Differentiate between:
(a) An artery and a vein.
Arteries
Arteries are the blood vessels that blood away from the heart to various parts of the body.
Veins
Veins are the blood vessels that carry blood to the heart from various parts of the body. In veins, valves are found which prevent the backflow. Veins carry deoxygenated blood. An exception is pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood.
Arteries | Veins |
1. Carries oxygenated blood away from the heart. Exception: pulmonary artery. | 1. Carries deoxygenated blood toward the heart. Exception: pulmonary veins. |
2. They are located deep within the body. | 2. They are located close to the surface of the skin. |
3. They appear red in colour. | 3. They appear blue in colour. |
4. Arteries have rigid, highly muscular, and thicker walls. | 4. Veins have thinner and less muscular walls. |
5. Blood flows through arteries under high pressure due to the pumping pressure of the heart. | 5. Blood flows through veins under low pressure due to the capillary action of veins. |
6. CO2 level of arterial blood is low. | 6. CO2 level of venous blood is high. |
