Differentiate between a metal oxide and a metal hydroxide

metal oxides are formed by oxidation of metals in air. metals hydroxides are usually formed by hydrolysis of metal oxide in presence of water
Eg; magnesium when burn in air gives magnesium oxide which on treatment with water give magnesium hydroxides.
