Question

Differentiate between a true solution and a colloidal solution.

Open in App
Solution

True solutionColloidal solution
  1. A true solution is a homogeneous mixture.
  1. A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture.
2. The particle size of a true solution is smaller than 1nm i.e., 10-9m in diameter. Therefore, they cannot be seen by the naked eye or even with a microscope. 2. The size of particles in a colloid ranges between 1nm and 100nm in diameter which is bigger than the true solution.
3. Because of their tiny particle size, they do not scatter a beam of light passing through the solution. So, the path of light is not visible in a solution. 3. The size of particles is too small to be individually seen by naked eyes. But, they scatter beam of light passing through them.
4. The solute particles do not settle down when left undisturbed i.e., the solution is stable. 4. The particles of colloids do not settle down when left undisturbed but can get deposited at the bottom by centrifugation.
