Differentiate between anions and cations.
Ions: It is defined as charged atom or molecule which is formed by the gain or loss of electrons.
For example Na+ , Cl-
It is of two types cation and anion.
Anion | Cation |
Ions having a negative charge | Ions having a positive charge |
The size of the anion is larger than its parent atom | The size of the cation is smaller than its parent atom |
It has more electrons than the protons | It has more protons than the electrons |
Anions are indicated with a minus sign (-) | Cations are indicated with a plus sign (+) |
Example: Cl- (Chloride ion), F- (Fluoride ion) | Example: Na+(Sodium-ion), K+ (Potassium ion) |
