Each kidneys are made up of more than 1 million nephrons. Nephron are the structural and functional unit of kidney.

Loop of Henle

It is a hair pin like structure found in the nephrons that runs into the medulla of kidney. It has a descending limb and ascending limb.

The difference between the ascending and descending loop of Henle are as follow:

Descending Loop of Henle

It is the thicker segment of the loop of Henle.It is the thinner segment of the loop of Henle.
It is impermeable to waterIt is permeable to water and hence, allows the reabsorption of water
It is permeable to electrolyte and hence, allows the absorption of electrolytes during tubular reabsorption.It is impermeable to electrolytes.
