Ascus and basidium

Ascus is a spherical, cylindrical or club-shaped structure in which usually eight ascospores are formed endogenously. They are the characteristic feature of the members of Ascomycotina. Whereas, basidium is also a club-shaped structure but here basidiospores are formed exogenously on minute stalks, the sterigmata. They are the characteristic feature of the members of Basidiomycotina.
