The cell wall is the extraneous coat of non-living material of the plant, bacterial and fungal cells in which the plasma membrane is encased. The cell membrane is the outermost living membrane surrounding the cytoplasm that consists of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins.
It maintains the cells shape and rigidity to the cell it surrounds. It functions to regulate the entrance and exit of molecules from the cell.
