Question

Differentiate between conduction and convection.

Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Give definitions of conduction and convection.
  • Explain how conduction and convection work in the earth’s atmosphere.
Solution:
Conduction
  • Conduction process is the mechanism of heat transfer between two adjacent parts of a body due to their temperature difference.
Convection
  • Convection process is the mode of heat transfer by the motion of matter which takes place only in fluids.
  • The air at very low altitude comes in direct contact with the earth’s surface and gets heated through the conduction process.
  • The heated air near the earth’s surface expands and rises up into the atmosphere.
  • While the colder air from the atmosphere sinks down near the earth’s surface to get heated and rise.
  • As they rise, the cold air from the atmosphere once again sinks down to get heated and rise again. This process continues in a cyclic motion.
