Cysts are means of perennation in protists which usually develop during
unfavourable conditions like drought, over-population, lack of food and
oxygen, accumulation of metabolic wastes in the cytoplasm and changes in
temperature and pH, etc. Encystment is required for survivals
protection and dispersal. On the other hand, trichocysts are flask-shaped
structures present on the body of some ciliates (e.g., Paramecium).
These small dart-like structures are ejected with force to stun prey.
