Solution

On the basis of the behavior of cotyledons, germination may be of the following two types:
1. Epigeal Germination:

  1. In epigeal germination, the cotyledons are pushed upwards above the soil into the air and light due to the rapid growth and elongation of the hypocotyl.
  2. For example, bean, cotton, castor, papaya, onion, and tamarind

2. Hypogeal Germination:

  1. In this type of germination, the seed remains inside the soil.
  2. For example, wheat, rice, maize, pea, groundnut, mango, etc.

Epigeal germination

Hypogeal germination

  1. Cotyledon comes above the surface of the soil.
  1. Cotyledon remains below the surface of the soil.
2. Elongates and raises the cotyledons above the ground surface. 2. Does not raise the cotyledons above ground.
3. For example- Castor, beans, tamarind, onions, gourds 3. For example- Pea, mango, gram, custard apple, maize, lotus
