Question

differentiate between fragmentation and regeneration

Open in App
Solution

Fragmentation

An organism is split into fragments and each fragment grows into complete individual organism. So it is a systematic process occurred in a life span during reproduction
Eg:Spirogyra

It occurs in multicellular organisms with simple body organization. Here an organism breaks into pieces and each piece develops into individual organism. No specified cells are involved in fragmentation. It is always a method of asexual reproduction.

REGENERATION

It is a simple process of regrowth generally occurred due to some accident ie damaging event. In this case organism allows partial or complete regrowth of tissue.

It occurs in fully differentiated multicellular organisms with complex body organization. Here the broken part may not develop into a new individual. It may or may not be a method of reproduction.
