Hypogeal germination:
In hypogeal germination, the cotyledons and hypocotyl remain in the soil. The epicotyl is pushed above the ground for growth but the hypocotyl stays at the same place underground. An example is pea.
Epigeal germination:
In epigeal germination, the cotyledons are pushed above the soil by rapid elongation of the hypocotyl and they function as photosynthetic organs till the establishment of a seedling. The epicotyl remains the same length throughout. An example is common bean.
