Question

Differentiate between Lysosome and Ribosome.

Open in App
Solution

Lysosome:

  1. It is a membrane-bound organelle that enclosed membrane-bound digestive enzymes capable of breaking down malfunctioning cells as well as destroying foreign pathogens.

Ribosome:

  1. It is an organelle that is found either floating freely or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum.

Difference between Lysosome and Ribosome:

LysosomeRibosome
1. Lysosomes are membrane bound organelles.1. Ribosomes are not membrane bound but when they make certain proteins, they become membrane-bound organelles, attaching themselves to the endoplasmic reticulum.
2. Lysosomes generally have a size ranging in micrometers. 2. Ribosomes typically are 20nm - 30nm in size.
3. Lysosomes are mostly found in animal cells. Plant cells may have Lysosomes but they are not as important as in the case of plant cells.3. Ribosomes are found in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes.
4. Lysosomes breakdown old/malfunctioning cells and destroy foreign cells such as bacteria, and break down viruses.4. Ribosomes are responsible for protein synthesis. They are also very integral in the process of translation.
