Question

Differentiate between peripheral proteins and integral proteins.

Open in App
Solution

The peripheral proteins remain associated with membrane surface, while the integral proteins enter the lipid bilayer and make an integral part of the membrane. The peripheral proteins (also known as extrinsic proteins) are soluble and readily dissociate from the membrane, whereas the integral proteins (also known as intrinsic proteins) are relatively insoluble and dissociate with difficulty.
