Differentiate between plasma membrane and cell wall.

S. no. Cell wall Plasma membrane
1. Cell wall is the outermost layer in plant cells. Plasma membrane lies on the outside of animal cells and inner to cell wall in plant cells.
2. Cell wall is formed of cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin.. Plasma membrane is formed of lipids and proteins and small number of small carbohydrates (i.e. oligosaccharides).
3. Cell wall is rigid in structure but freely permeable. Plasma membrane is non-rigid and flexible but is selectively permeable.
4. Major function of cell wall is to provide protection and strength to the cell. Major function of plasma membrane is to hold cellular contents and control passage of materials in and out of the cell.
