Question

Differentiate between regular and diffused reflection. Does diffused reflection mean the failure of the laws of reflection? [3 MARKS]

Solution

Each point: 1 Mark

Following are the differences:
1) In regular reflection the reflected rays are parallel if the incident rays are parallel but in diffused reflection the incident rays are not parallel even if the incident rays are parallel.
2) Regular reflection takes place from smooth surfaces while diffused reflection takes place from irregular surfaces.
3) Regular reflection forms sharp image of an object while diffused reflection does not form any image.

Diffused reflection does not mean failure of law of reflection. The law is still valid for each ray individually but as we observe for a bulk of rays together, the reflection law appears to be failing.
