Respiration is the phenomena where an organic compound is broken down via oxidation to release energy, CO2 and water. It occurs inside the living cells to obtain energy. Oxygen is needed in the final stage of respiration i.e. in electron transport chain where it gets converted to water. It takes place due to various enzymes. Whereas combustion is the burning of any substance at high temperature. It can produce energy in the form of heat and light. It needs oxygen continuously. It does not take place inside living cells. It does not require enzymes.
