Question

Differentiate between simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion.

Open in App
Solution

Transport of metabolites across the membrane along the concentration gradient and without the use of a carrier molecule is called simple diffusion. It is a slow process. On the contrary, facilitated diffusion is a more rapid form of diffusion, in which the molecules move through channels in the membrane. In facifitated diffusion a carrier (protein) is required for transport across the membrane.
