Question

Differentiate between TP and WP in plant cells. List any four ways in which turgidity serves a useful purpose in the plants.

Open in App
Solution

TP or Turgor pressure is the pressure developed inside the cell due to the entry of a solvent and it's magnitude depends on the amount of water that enters the cell.
WP or wall pressure is the force exerted by the cell wall against the Turgor pressure and hence it's magnitude depends on the magnitude of the Turgor pressure and the nature of the cell wall. Usually Wall pressure is equal to Turgor pressure.
Turgidity is useful for plants as :
1. Maintains the rigidity of the cell.
2. Makes the surface of leaf properly available to sunlight by proper orientation.
3. Helps in opening of Stomata by the guard cells.
4. Essential for maintaining the shape and normal growth of cell.
5. Helps in movement of phloem sap.
