Reducing sugars and non-reducing sugars

The carbohydrates with a free carbonyl group have the ability to reduce solutions of various metallic ions, so they are known as reducing sugars. On the other hand, the carbohydrates without a free carbonyl group can not reduce the solution of various metallic ions and they are called non-reducing sugars.
