Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures

Open in App
Solution

Substances can be called as mixture, if it contains different components that are not chemically linked

Homogeneous mixtures

  • Mixtures containing components which are in same phase, i.e.., it appears to be a single substance, but contain different substances which are not chemically linked.
  • Example: air. alloys
  • Alloy is a homogeneous mixture, which is a combination of two or more metals or one metal and non-metal, that showcases increased strength and durability.
  • Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon (2%).
  • Solution is a homogeneous mixture containing two or more substances which is dissolved in a solvent.

Heterogeneous mixtures

  • Mixtures having components which are in different phase, i.e..,we can visually distinct the presence of components in it.
  • Example: mixture of sugar and sand.
  • We can easily distinguish the presence of sugar sand because they remain physically separate.
  • Suspension also fall into this category (sand in water) where we can easily see the suspended particles with the naked eye and we can separate the particles using the filtration method.
  • Mixture of immiscible liquids which can be called as an emulsion is also a heterogeneous mixture. Example: oil and water.
