It is two different vegetable. Both are from the same family but look and taste are different.

Potato is light brown in colour, while sweet potato is pink in colour.

sweet potato is enlarged area of the root-tuber, or storage root, can be produced at the end or middle of a root or involve the entire root.
The potatoes grow on underground stems, called stolons. You can know potato tubers are actually thickened stemsbecause they have buds that sprout stems and leaves.
