Diffusion is a slow process and is not dependent on a system. Why?

Diffusion across two surfaces depends upon the permeability of the interface. This interface can be any thing and living structure or non living structure and cell membrane is an interface between the extra cellular and intracellular space however the diffusion does not depend on living system because it depends only on gradient and diffusion can occur in body living and non living systems unlike active transport which only occurs in living systems.
