The dikaryophase is a characteristic which is unique to some fungi. Here, the two nuclei of two cells pair off and cohabit without fusing. This co-living state is maintained in all the cells of hyphae by synchronous division so that the nuclear pairs are passed to the new cells. This phenomena is observed in Ustilago.
Dikaryophase is also observed in the life cycle of Puccinia, but is confined to the primary host which is wheat.
