Question

Dilute hydrochloric acid is added in turn to a mixture of iron and sulphur and to the compound formed between iron and sulphur. Name the gas formed in each case.

Solution

On heating iron and sulphur to a sufficiently high temperature, iron sulphide is formed.

Fe(s) + S(s) → FeS(s)

When HCl is added to mixture of iron and sulphur, iron reacts with HCl to form iron (II) chloride with the evolution of hydrogen gas.

Fe(s) + 2HCl(aq) → FeCl2 + H2

When HCl is added to iron sulphide, iron (II) chloride is formed and hydrogen sulphide gas is liberated in the process.

FeS(s) + 2HCl(aq) → FeCl2(aq) + H2S(g)
Iron (II)
chloride
