Question

DIRECTIONS: Each of these questions contains an Assertion followed by Reason. Read them carefully and answer the question on the basis of the following options. You have to select the one that best describes the two statements.

Assertion: Displacement of a body may be zero when distance travelled by it is not zero.
Reason: The displacement is the longest distance between initial and final positions.

Solution

The correct option is C

If Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.

Explanation for correct option:

Assertion: Displacement of a body may be zero when the distance travelled by it is not zero.

  1. Displacement is the shortest distance travelled by the body.
  2. So, like if a body starts moving from point A and then goes to B and then again return back to A.
  3. Then in such case the body covers some distance, but at last, body is at its initial position.
  4. So, in this case displacement of the body will b zero, while the distance is non-zero.
  5. Hence, the statement given in Assertion is correct.

Reason: The displacement is the longest distance between initial and final positions.

  1. Displacement is the shortest distance travelled by the body.
  2. So, the statement given in Reason is incorrect.

Therefore, assertion is correct, but the reason is an incorrect.

Hence, option (c) is the correct answer.
