Question

Disc of mass M=10 kg and radius R=50 cm is revolving about fixed vertical axis passing through its centre and perpendicular to its plane, on smooth horizontal surface with angular velocity ω0=10 rad/sec. A block of mass m=5 kg is connected through disc through slack string as shown in the diagram. Find the angular velocity (in rad/s) when string becomes taut.
Assume that rope doesnot slip over the disc

Solution

Let, angular velocity (ωf)=ω after string becomes taut.
As there is no external torque exerted on system, angular momentum will be conserved.
Initial angular momentum = final angular momentum
(12MR2)ω0=12MR2×ω+mvr {here r=R}
12×M×R2ω0=12MR2ω+mvR
As v=Rω
12Mω0=(12M+m)ω
ω=Mω0M+2m=10×1010+10=5 rad/s
