Discriminant of $- x^{2} + \frac{1}{2} x + \frac{1}{2} = 0$ is

$- x^{2} + \frac{1}{2} x + \frac{1}{2} = 0$

$a = 1, b = \frac{1}{2}, c = \frac{1}{2}$

$D = b^{2} - 4 a c = {(\frac{1}{2})}^{2} - 4 (- 1) (\frac{1}{2})$

$= \frac{1}{4} + 2 = \frac{1 + 8}{4} = \frac{9}{4}$

$∴$ The diccriminant is $\frac{9}{4}$

or $\sqrt{D} = \sqrt{\frac{9}{4}} = \pm \frac{3}{2}$
