  • Knee-jerk is also known as a patellar reflex is caused by striking the patella or knee tendon.
  • It produces a signal that travels back to the spinal cord and synapses without interneurons to the spinal cord.
  • From this region, an alpha motor neuron conducts an efferent impulse back to the quadriceps muscles which triggers contraction.
  • This contraction coordinated along with the relaxation of the antagonistic flexor hamstring muscle makes the leg to kick.
