  • Marchantia is a genus of bryophytic plants which consists of a group of liverworts.
  • It shows differentiation and can be divided into- an upper assimilatory part and a lower storage part with a distinct upper epidermis with air channels.

  • In asexual reproduction, the thallus (haploid) has tiny cup-like structures called gemmae cups are used.

  • Protonema is a compact and a filamentous structure with short rhizoids is formed from a haploid spore, which forms thalli by mitotic divisions

  • In sexual reproduction, the sperms from antheridia which is also called the antherozoids (flagellated) on the male plant fertilizes the egg cell present in the archegonium of a female plant.
