Dear Student,
1) India is one of the world’s richest countries in terms of its vast array of biological diversity.
2) India is home to around nearly 8% of all the species of flora and fauna found in the world from which India have 47000 species of flora and to over 81000 species of fauna.
3) But over-exploitation and insensitivity towards our environment has led to large-scale degradation of biodiversity in India.
4) 10 per cent of India’s wild flora and 20 per cent of its mammals are on the threatened list. And because of this many would now be categorised as ‘critical’ and are on the verge of extinction, for eg, cheetah, pink-headed duck, mountain quail.
5) The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, or IUCN, has classified the species of flora and fauna into normal(cattle, sal, pine,), extinct(Asiatic cheetah, pink head duck.), endangered(black buck, crocodile, Indian wild ass), vulnerable(blue sheep, Asiatic elephant, Gangetic dolphin), rare(wild Asiatic buffalo, desert fox and hornbill), or endemic(Andaman teal, Nicobar pigeon, Andaman wild pig) categories.
