An example of human involvement in forest management are:

In India, people have long been involved in forest protection and effective management. Since 1950, India has been engaged in a tree-planting effort known as Van Mahotsava. The plantation is carried out by both government and private entities during the months of July and February each year as part of this programme.

  • The Maharaja of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, requested that his minister get woods for his new castle. The Minister and his team traveled to a nearby village to clear land. The Bishnois were the people that lived in that village.
  • Amrita Devi, a Bishnoi woman, shows incredible bravery by embracing a tree and daring the King's warriors to cut her first before cutting the tree. The tree was more important to her than her own life.
  • Her three daughters, along with Amrita Devi, were also killed for attempting to preserve the trees from being cut down. Hundreds of other rural residents followed Amrita Devi and her daughters and died as a result. For the first time in history, such a big number of people gave their lives in the name of forest conservation.
  • To honor them, the Indian government established the Amrita Devi Bishnoi Animals Protection Award, which recognizes individuals or groups who have gone above and beyond to safeguard wildlife and forests.
