Discuss an experiment which exhibits that a colloidal sol shows the phenomenon of tyndall effect while a true solution does not.

Experiment:

Requirements:

  1. Glass of water.
  2. Quarter glass of milk.
  3. A strong led torch.
  4. Dark room.

Procedure:

Take a glass of water and a led torch and light the torch from one side of the glass. You will observe path of the light is very faint. If the water is distilled water path wont be observed.

Then put the milk in to the water and then repeat the experiment, you will the path to be clearly visible. This is because of the scattering of the light by colloidal particles present in the milk.

Examples:

Tyndall effect is seen when..

  • sunlight comes in a dark room.
  • sunlight comes on ground through canopy of trees.
