Copper loses its luster due to the formation of a greenish layer of copper carbonate (CuCO3)on its surface. This is due to the reaction of carbon dioxide and moisture in air with the surface of copper vessels.
Whereas, on exposure to air, silver articles turn blackish after some time due to the formation of a layer of silver sulphide
(Ag2S) formed by the reaction of silver with hydrogen sulphide in the air.
