Street hawkers are a significant part of the street population in cities. There are about 10 million street vendors in India. They sell a variety of products for daily consumption such as fruits, vegetables and other items like handicrafts, garments, newspapers and magazines.
The condition of the street hawkers is very bad due to the following reasons:
1. They are given a lower status in the society as compared to others.
2. They have no social security and can only sell their goods in certain areas.
3. They are humiliated and beaten by the police. Therefore, to protect themselves, they sometimes have to pay money to the police.
4. They have temporary living arrangements, which can be destroyed anytime.
5. They have no fixed income.
