Solution

Instructions:
  • Basis of classification (0.5 marks)
  • Explain crust (1.5 marks)
  • Explain mantle (1.5 marks)
  • Explain core (1.5 marks)
Solution:
  • On the basis of, density of material, chemical composition and physical state of matter, earth’s interior is classified into three main layers -
Crust:
  • It is the uppermost layer of the earth’s surface.
  • It has a depth ranging upto 60 kilometers on an average, varying at different locations.
  • Also, the crust can be classified into two parts, one is the continental crust and the other is the oceanic crust.
Mantle:
  • It is the middle layer and is rich in magnesium as well as iron.
  • Mantle is located at a depth of about 2900 kilometres from the earth’s surface.
  • It can also be classified into two parts, one is the upper mantle, it is in partial molten state and magma formation happens here, while the lower mantle is in solid state.
Core:
  • The innermost layer of the earth’s crust is called core.
  • It is located at a depth of about 6371 kilometres from the earth’s surface.
  • It is also classified into two parts, one is inner core which is solid while the outer core is in molten state.
  • It is rich in nickel and iron also referred as NIFE.
