Question

Discuss the drawbacks of Bohr's model of atom.

Open in App
Solution

The drawbacks of Bohr's model of the atom are as follows-

  1. It fails to account for the finer details of the hydrogen atom spectrum observed by using sophisticated spectroscopic techniques.
  2. It cannot explain the spectrum of atoms other than hydrogen, for example, the helium atom, which possesses only two electrons.
  3. Also, it is unable to explain the splitting of spectral lines in the presence of a magnetic field (Zeeman effect) or an electric field (Stark effect).
  4. It could not explain the ability of atoms to form molecules by chemical bonds.
